  
- 14 October 1902 – In Yekaterinburg the 19th in Russia verification tent was opened, which became the basis for the development of metrology in the Urals
- 1942 – on the basis of the organized departments with the involvement of specialists from D.I. Mendeleev VNIIM, evacuated from Leningrad, Sverdlovsk Branch of VNIIM (SF VNIIM) was established
- 1973 – SF VNIIM was delegated the functions of the Main Centre of Certified Reference Material State Service
- 1986 - SF VNIIM was transformed into All-Union Research Institute for Metrology of Certified Reference Materials (VNIIMSO)
- 1992 – VNIIMSO was transformed into The Ural Research Institute for Metrology (UNIIM).
Today UNIIM is
- State scientific metrological centre, specializing in the following fields of measurement: temperature and thermal physics, surface density and thickness of coatings, flow parameters, magnetic and electrical quantities, linear-angular, deformation and force, mass, vibration, the torque of force and mechanic power, humidity, physico-chemical composition and properties of substances and materials, pressure; in UNIIM Centre for standards scientific custodians of 13 state standards and high-accuracy installations reproduce, keep and transfer the units of physical quantities to the territorial bodies of Rostechregulirovanie, enterprisers and organizations;
- Parent body of Certified Reference Material State Service;
- State centre for testing of measurement instruments;
- The body for certification of measurement instruments;
- Accreditation body in the Russian calibration system;
- “METRON” training centre for specialist qualifications upgrading
